You’ve probably heard of Carl Jung. He was a super smart guy who came up with a lot of cool stuff about the human mind. He was one of the first people to study the unconscious, which is the part of our mind that we don’t know about or control. For example, he said that we have dreams, symbols, and myths that come from our unconscious and reveal our hidden thoughts and feelings. He also invented things like archetypes, synchronicity, and the collective unconscious, which are all super fascinating and useful. Archetypes are universal patterns or images that we all share, like the hero, the mother, or the trickster. Synchronicity is when two things happen at the same time that seem related but have no obvious cause, like seeing a black cat and then having bad luck. The collective unconscious is the part of our unconscious that we share with all humanity, like our instincts, emotions, and memories.

But one of his most interesting and important ideas is the shadow. The shadow is the part of us that we don’t like or want to admit. It’s the part of us that has all the bad stuff, like our fears, anger, jealousy, greed, lust, violence, and so on. For example, if you are afraid of spiders, that’s part of your shadow. If you get angry at your boss, that’s part of your shadow. If you are jealous of your friend’s success, that’s part of your shadow. The shadow also has some good stuff, like our creativity, growth, and transformation, but we often don’t see it or use it because it’s too hard or scary to deal with. For example, if you have a talent for painting, but you never pursue it because you think you’re not good enough, that’s part of your shadow. If you have a desire to travel the world, but you never do it because you think it’s too risky, that’s part of your shadow. If you have a vision for a better society, but you never act on it because you think it’s too unrealistic, that’s part of your shadow.

Jung said that the shadow is not evil or bad, but just natural and normal. He said that the shadow is a part of us that we need to accept and understand. He said that the shadow can make our lives better if we bring it into our awareness. But if we ignore or hide it, it can make our lives worse by causing problems like projection, neurosis, addiction, violence, or mental illness. Projection is when we see our own flaws or faults in other people and blame them for it. For example, if you are insecure about your appearance, you may project your insecurity onto others and criticize them for being ugly or fat. Neurosis is when we have irrational thoughts or behaviors that interfere with our normal functioning. For example, if you are obsessed with cleanliness, you may have a neurosis that makes you wash your hands compulsively or avoid touching anything dirty. Addiction is when we depend on something or someone to cope with our pain or boredom. For example, if you are unhappy with your life, you may have an addiction to alcohol or drugs or gambling or shopping or sex. Violence is when we harm ourselves or others physically or emotionally. For example, if you are angry with yourself or someone else, you may have violence that makes you hurt yourself or others by cutting or hitting or yelling.

Jung also said that the shadow is not just something we have as individuals, but also something we have as groups or societies. He said that the shadow can make us hate or fear other people, groups, or countries that we think are different or bad. This can lead to things like prejudice, discrimination, hatred, conflict, or war. For example, if you are a Christian, you may have a shadow that makes you hate or fear Muslims or Jews or atheists. If you are an American, you may have a shadow that makes you hate or fear Russians or Chinese or Iranians. If you are a man, you may have a shadow that makes you hate or fear women or gays or transgenders. Jung said that the shadow can be very dangerous when things are tough or changing and we look for someone to blame or hate. For example, if there is a pandemic or a recession or a war, you may have a shadow that makes you blame or hate immigrants or minorities or foreigners.

Jung’s idea of the shadow is really important and helpful for us today. It makes us face and accept the parts of us that we have been avoiding or lying about. It makes us learn and appreciate the different sides of our human nature. It makes us grow and change beyond our limits and fears. It makes us change ourselves and our world for the better.

The benefit of getting to know your dark side is the benefit of getting to know yourself. By facing your shadow, you can find your true self and unlock your full potential. By understanding your shadow, you can heal your pain and become whole. By going beyond your shadow, you can reach a higher level of awareness and wisdom.
