If you want to sound like a boss, you need to know how to talk to different people in different situations. You don’t want to sound boring, rude or clueless. You want to sound smart, confident and nice. Here are some tips on how to sound like a boss when you need to:

When you want to make a point

  • Say it straight. Don’t waste time or words. Tell people what you think and why you think it. Keep it short and simple.
  • Say it three times. Well, not exactly. But use three main points or examples to back up your point. People will remember it better and believe it more.
  • Say it positively. Don’t use words like “problem”, “worry” or “issue” that can make things sound bad or your fault. Use words like “challenge”, “opportunity” or “situation” that can make things sound good or solvable.

When you want to give feedback

  • Be specific. Don’t say things like “good job” or “needs improvement”. Say what the person did well and what they can do better.
  • Be helpful. Don’t just say what was good or bad. Say why it was good or bad and how it affected the team or the project.
  • Be nice. Don’t be mean or sarcastic when you talk to people. Use polite and professional words and phrases that can make them feel good and motivated.

When you want to listen

  • Pay attention. Don’t look at your phone, your computer or your watch. Look at the person who is talking and show them you care by nodding, smiling or asking questions.
  • Be understanding. Don’t judge or cut off the person who is talking. Try to see where they are coming from and how they feel and say things like “I see” or “I hear you”.
  • Be supportive. Don’t ignore or downplay the person’s worries or troubles. Offer help, advice, or solutions if you can and want to.

Sounding like a boss can help you get your point across, get things done and get along with people at work. By following these tips, you can improve your communication skills and become a more awesome and liked leader.
